Carer Conversations
Dementia Support Australia and the Australian Frontotemporal Dementia Association are working in partnership to develop and run a nationwide network of proactive groups called Carer Conversations. Designed for carers who are supporting someone living with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), the groups are an opportunity for you to meet with other carers either face to face or virtually.
The groups are facilitated by health professionals with expertise in FTD and consultants from Dementia Support Australia who provide specific tailored advice on behaviour support for the changes that may be occurring as a result of this diagnosis. Run once a month, Carer Conversations are a safe space for you to share and learn.
We encourage you to register your interest below so we can enrol you in a program in your area – either face to face or online - via the online form.
Dementia Support Australia in partnership with Australian Frontotemporal Dementia Association (AFTDA)
AFTDA is a registered non-profit carer support organisation with a mission to:
- Establish and support Australian carer support groups for frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and related younger-onset dementias.
- Provide information, education, and support to those diagnosed with FTD and related disorders, their carers and families.
- Educate and work with clinicians to reduce diagnostic delays and improve outcomes of individuals with FTD.
- Advocate with government, peak dementia bodies and organisations for affordable quality care services for people with FTD, and support research and treatments in FTD.
- Increase public awareness about FTD and the needs of those with lived experience of FTD.
- Facilitate the international exchange of ideas with FTD researchers and clinicians.
DSA and AFTDA want a world where FTD is understood, effectively diagnosed, treated, cured, and ultimately prevented. For more information about frontotemporal dementia, please visit the AFTDA website.
What is Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)?
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is an umbrella term used to describe a group of younger onset neurodegenerative conditions which can impact anyone, but more typically affects people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a program in my local area?
At this time, AFTDA and DSA are establishing Carer Conversation groups across Australia. We recognise that accessibility is important and if there isn’t a group near you, you may be able to access via online channels.
Can I still receive NDIS and DSA supports?
Definitely! This group is supported by DSA but doesn’t impact any of your other support or care packages you might be receiving. And it’s totally free!
My family member has only just received a diagnosis – is this the right group for me?
We will work with you to understand your specific needs before enrolling you in the group. It might be the right time for you to join – but if it isn’t our team can support in other ways and when you’re ready we’ll be here.
Is there a time limit on how long I can attend Carer Conversations?
No. We understand that the experience of caring for someone living with FTD is different for everyone. You might need our support for a short time or a long time. We work with you along your journey.
