Supporting someone living with dementia during the holiday season

During the holiday season you may be supporting someone living with dementia who is away from familiar surroundings. Here are a few suggestions to help you bring a touch of holiday warmth to those you care for.

  • Decorate the room or space with small and familiar holiday items like family photos, ornaments, or even a favourite blanket. These can make the environment feel more like home and reduce stress.
  • Spend time together looking through photo albums or making a small craft (like a card). These low-stress activities can be both joyful and comforting.
  • Playing gentle holiday music or using a familiar scent, like lavender, can evoke comforting memories. Choose soft, calming elements that your loved one enjoys.
  • Celebrate the special day by bringing in some favourite food and drink.
  • Visits can be the highlight of the day. Aim for shorter, low-key interactions to avoid the time being overwhelming.

We hope these suggestions help create a supportive, meaningful holiday experience for the person living with dementia.
