Psychotropic Medication in the Management of Behaviours

#Healthcare Professional #BPSD

This helpsheet summarises evidence around various psychotropic medication use in the management of behaviours and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Many behaviours associated with dementia do not respond to and may be exacerbated by medications and should only be used when behavioural interventions have been ineffective.

The key drugs to avoid are those with an anticholinergic activity and should be limited to the treatment of sever aggression and psychosis.

This guide covers the general principles of mediation management and pharmacotherapies available for BPSD.
