2023 Staying at Home program

#Stories

The Staying at Home program is creating opportunities for carers and people with dementia to meet others who are going through the same experiences in a supportive environment.

The program builds the confidence of both the carer and the person living with dementia through a range of shared experiences, and more importantly an increased support system.

A recent attendee at one of our programs held in Victoria said, “The program was amazing. The opportunity to meet with other carers was very enlightening. In our day-to-day life we have no involvement with anyone else who cares for someone that has dementia. Sharing thoughts, emotions and lots of other issues and suggestions was very helpful. We did have lots of much-needed laughs.

“The team made the program fun while caring for our loved ones and at the same time imparting their knowledge and tips for coping. Providing time away from caring duties let us all have a break. I returned home feeling rested.”

The Staying at Home program is a carer wellbeing and respite program for people in the community living with dementia and their carers. Provided in a relaxed environment, small interactive groups join dementia consultants and subject matter experts to discuss practical issues that build confidence in the caring role.

Engagement consultants work with the person living with dementia to create their own life story and participate in a range of meaningful activities and for those wanting to learn more about their diagnosis, education is provided informally through conversations. Spending time away from their carer also offers a gentle introduction to respite care.

Partners, friends and children of people living with dementia in the community are welcome to attend the program. The program has been funded by the Australian Government and there are no costs to attend.

If you or someone you know is supporting a person with dementia at home and think they would benefit from the Staying at Home program in 2023, they can register their interest on the Staying at Home webpage found in the below link.
